Week 14, Fall 2017

Teaching Hub Week 14

What follows below is the edition of the Hub we had prepared for Week 7, pre-strike. We’re publishing it now, in Week 14, as the “We’re Back!” edition. We’d also like to note that we know there is lots of work to be done, post-strike, to get through the rest of the semester, and we’re here for you. If there’s anything we can do to support you as you reorganize your course content and assessments, please let us know. You can send us an email, call us at ext. 1216, or come to see us in the C1 203 hallway at the Sutherland campus.

“Most importantly, share your work. You’ll find that sharing and seeking feedback provides you with the next part of your plan and the next path you’ll take on your professional learning journey.” ~Alana Callan

This week’s Patch, We’re Total Pro, was “patched” together by the LDS Team’s own Alana Callan, and explores personalized professional learning and its connection to hashtags. Check it out, and let us know what you think using our hashtag: #FlemingLDS.

D2L Thing of the Week: Discussion Tool

The Discussion tool is a great way to keep your students engaged, even outside of class time. You can

  • set up a question for students to answer before they come to the next class;
  • set up weekly one-minute reflections that students complete before they leave class; or
  • have them comment, ask questions, and/or provide feedback to each other in a discussion topic.

Want to learn more about how to set up and use the Discussion tool in D2L? Check out our handy dandy tip sheet!

Non-D2L Thing of the Week: ImageQuilts

Piggy-backing on the Ontario Extend “Daily Extend” suggestion below, we’re featuring Image Quilts, a Chrome plug-in that makes beautiful image “quilts” out of your image search. Here’s an example of one created when we searched, well, ourselves:

Library Faculty & Staff Resources Page

Check out the Library’s faculty and staff page for a list of all of the ways in which our fantastic library staff can help you and your students. And that’s in addition to the invaluable, often-entertaining, quotations to be found on their whiteboard each day, such as the clever, intelligent, witty one at left.

It’s not the copywrong policy – it’s the copyright policy! Be a good information citizen and uphold that copyright policy. Need help? The library’s online modules can help you navigate copyright and avoid plagiarism or just drop in and visit the library. Gotta love the library!

Library Request a Workshop

Want to request a library workshop? The Library’s Faculty and Staff page includes a Request a Workshop button. By pushing it, you can set up a variety of sessions for your students, such as Library Orientations, Searching for Articles, & Library Skills CORE Modules, among many others. Magic, right?

Note: You must be on the actual page for the button to work; you can’t just push it on our Teaching Hub page and expect results!

This week’s selection from the Daily Extends references Fleming’s Open Faculty Patchbook as its inspiration:
