Week 6 Fall 2017

Teaching Hub Week 6

For all of the meat-eaters in our audience, there’s a solid chance that you consumed some turkey this weekend (and maybe have leftovers in your lunch, as well). Well, now they’re coming after you! To find out more about how (and why) we made this GIF, see the Learning Technology and Ontario Extend sections below.

Patch.PNG“When I think back I realize it’s been the pertnears that taught me the most… Failing teaches us we were wrong this time, but if we fail in a safe and supportive environment we learn from that and grow from it.” ~T. Mikel

This week’s “patch,” “The ‘Pertnear'” comes to us from Tom Mikel, Professor in Urban Forestry & Arboriculture. Interested in finding out just what, exactly, a “pertnear” is? Then check it out, and let us know your thoughts, and/or any tips you’d like to add. Blog with #FlemingCampsites as a hashtag, and/or tweet us: #FlemingLDS.

Did you know?: You, too, can write your very own “patch” for The Open Faculty Patchbook. Contact the LDS Team for more information.

D2L Thing of the Week: News Tool

There are lots of good reasons to use the News Tool on your D2L course page. It is an announcement tool that can be personalized to include the student’s name; you can add links, images, video, text, etc. Check out how to use the News Tool with our handy-dandy tipsheet.

Students can be notified when there are new news items by setting up notifications in their D2L profile.

Non-D2L Thing of the Week: GIPHY

In response to one of last week’s Ontario Extend prompts, Mary made her very first GIF (see here and here for information on how to pronounce that acronym!) using Giphy! And in an attempt to hit multiple birds (or, rather, turkeys) with one stone, it’s related to this week’s Hub theme, and can be seen at the top of this post. Her rationale for extending herself in this particular direction can be found in the Ontario Extend section, below.

You, too, can make animated GIFs for sharing with and entertaining your students, and we’d love to see what you come up with! You can also find GIFs you can use that someone else already created, like this one:

All We are Saying is GIF This a Chance

This week, Mary extended herself for a couple of these daily challenges, and not just because her blog post was cited in one of them (thanks, Terry)! One of these challenges involved creating her very first GIF using Giphy (see the Learning Technology section above, for more self-referential loops).

Try it out for yourself and tweet it at us #FlemingLDS and Ontario Extend #oext67!
