Teaching Hub: Post One, Week Zero

icons are by piktochart.com

This semester, The Learning Design & Support Team is launching The Teaching Hub where we will collect & share weekly stories, ideas, tips, guides & more about being a faculty member at Fleming College. It is not just a post on a web page, however. It is our community for Teaching & Learning in which we can all share & grow.

Emailing from your Class Roster

Curious about how you should email your students? The easiest way to communicate with your students is by using the Class Roster in Faculty Centre to email them (and to see their photos once they are uploaded after week 3). By emailing your students using the Class Roster, their email addresses are put into the BCC line of the message AND a copy of the email will be sent to your college email account. You are able to include attachments to messages sent through the class roster as well. More information AND instructions on how to use the Class Roster tool can be found here (Note: the link will download a Word file).

Class Absence Procedure

Did you know that there is a new Class Absence Procedure at Fleming? It distinguishes between four different absence types: Sanctioned, Planned, Unexpected, and Unsubstantiated. It also provides guidelines for faculty on how to deal with these different types of student absences, and a process for students to follow.

Looking for another college Policy or Procedure to help you get ready for your first few weeks of classes? See all of Fleming’s approved policies and procedures here.

Gone in 60 Seconds

Would you like to know more about some of the other departments the College has to offer, but not so much that you wouldn’t be willing to spend more than a minute doing so? Well, you’re in luck! Check out the New Faculty Toolkit: Gone in 60 Seconds Version where we have posted 60-second videos for various college departments telling you what they do for faculty. Each week, in the weekly Teaching Hub post, we will delve a little deeper into one of the various departments.

Introducing the Fleming Course Share Registry

Would you like to share what you do in D2L with your Fleming colleagues? Do you want to see what others are doing to get some great ideas?

Let’s open D2L up a little bit so that we can see what can be done and riff off of each other’s ideas. Seeing each other’s good work can be inspiring and motivating. Working in a lonely silo is maybe not so much.

Sign up for the Fleming Course Share Registry to allow access to your courses. The more you share, the more will be shared to you. Once you are granted access, you will be able to see how other teachers have presented material, as well as learning activities and assessments. You may see some innovative ideas that you could use with your courses. You will not see any student information in your colleague’s courses. You will be enrolled in the role of ‘Sharing Buddy’ 🙂

Course Share Registry List: See the list of which courses you may have access to if you’d like

Fill out the form at the bottom of this page to add your courses to the list and/or request access to one of the courses.

The more you give the more you get!
